You probably know all about Sterling Silver being 92.5% solid silver (if it was solid it wouldn't be able to hold it's shape... hence the mixture of base metal). However....


What is 14k Gold Filled I hear you ask?

 

Gold-filled items are created by mechanically bonding a layer of 14k gold to a base metal core, usually brass or copper. This is done using heat and pressure to fuse the gold to the base metal, creating a durable bond. In this case, 14k solid gold has been used as the outer layer.

 

The gold layer must constitute at least 5% of the item's total weight to be considered gold-filled. This is a significant difference from gold-plated items, which often contain less than 0.05% gold. 

 

Because the gold is bonded to the core, it's much more resistant to wear and tear than gold plating. It's less likely to chip, peel, or tarnish, and with proper care, can last for many years.  Here is a visual for you... I know we all love a good piccie!
